The Hel (Gamkaskloof)
The 24 km long Swartberg Pass, build by Thomas Bain in the 1880’s, climbs over
the 1436 m above sea level.

The Swartberg Pass is full of twists and turns with a steep ascent and even more impressive descent to Prince Albert. All this beauty takes on a different hue when viewed from the advance point touched by the trail. On top of the Swartberg Pass we turn left to the Hel – the following 50 km will take us 2 hours to complete. The road continues as if it will never end. At last we will enter the green valley of the Hel. Annietjie Joubert’s farm shop gives us the opportunity to buy home-made jam, dried fruit and mebos. We will also enjoy a cup of coffee at oom Zuki that manage the Hel Nature Reserve. Historian photos there will astonish you.

Namibia Tour
This Namibia tour will take you to the various outskirts of Namibia. The Kaokoveld in north-western region of Namibia is covered with rocks, plains and ragged mountains. It is often called Southern Africa’s last wilderness. Meet the friendly Himba inhabitants, 4x4 Van Zyl’s Pass, and see Epupa Falls disappear into mother earth.
Came and wonder with us if the ‘White Lady at the Brandberg is really female or white. The Brandberg is referring to the reddish-orange colour of the granite in the early morning and late afternoon.
The Western Namibia with all the kilometres of sand dunes is spectacular. The highest dunes shaping in the wind at sunset of sunrise is a sight not easily forgotten?

Game viewing in Ethosha is a dream for most of us. Ethosha has one of the world’s largest populations of endangered black rhino. The park is renowned for its lions, while leopard, cheetah, spotted hyena, elephants and various antelope species also roams there.
The Fish River Canyon is the world second largest canyon. Viewing it from above you realise how small we really are. Water is a powerful force of nature that shapes this part of the country bit by bit. We will splash in the hot spring water of Ais Ais.

Richtersveld Tour
Easter weekend 24 - 29 March 05
Cost 2500 per vehicle (2persons included)
R 500 per additional adult
R 300 per child under 12 years
(All camping fees & Park entrance fees are included).

This tour will take us to the only mountain desert in South Africa. The desert mountains of the far north-western Cape, known as the Richtersvelt, is one of the most breathtakingly beautiful parts of our subcontinent and one of the last remaining wilderness areas of South Africa. The desert scenery is spectacular and contrast vividly with the life giving waters of the Orange River. It is 162 445 hectares in size. The two most prominent and endearing features of the Richtersvelt are the weird and wonderful vegetation and geology. Life in the park is influenced by the mist from the West Coast, and the cold fronts that move in from the Atlantic.

In the de Koei area the mountainsides are splashed with ‘red paint’ which on closer inspection are red aloes (Aloe pllansii). The Richtersvelt National Park has been called one of the richest succulents’ areas in the world and surveys to determine the species are ongoing. On the south-eastern side of the barrier, there is true desert with very little vegetation and very little rainfall. The mountains in the Richtersvelt are truly awe-inspiring. Early prospectors expected to find fortunes of gold, copper and diamonds buried in the rocks. Very few of these fortune seekers were successful. Three of the four campsites that we will visit are along the river bank. Fishing, swimming or just simply staring at the glorious sun setting behind you as you face the river, gently kisses the mountains turning them gold. The last camp site in the Richtersvelt is at Kokerboomkloof where the plant life is fascinating, and the silence is numbing.
